APS Certificate
The Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) verifies the authenticity of academic documents for German authorities. It is a mandatory prerequisite for both university applications and the student visa, and should be started as early as possible since verification can take several weeks.
Process
- Start English/German language test preparation if the target programmes require it.
- If the student's field is affected, complete and clear the dMAT first (see the previous step).
- Create an account on the APS India portal and fill in schooling, diploma, and higher-education details.
- Pay the APS certification fee — currently ₹18,000, ideally via the CCAvenue online option, since bank transfers trigger slower manual verification.
- Courier the signed application form and original/notarised documents to the APS India office in New Delhi — in-person drop-off is no longer accepted.
- Inform the student's school/university that a verification query may arrive, and ask them to respond only from an official institutional email address (Gmail/Yahoo responses are rejected).
- Track status under 'My Account' on the portal; avoid sending repeated follow-up emails, as this can flag the account.
- Receive the digital APS certificate (DigZert PDF) by email once verification is complete — typically 3–6 weeks, longer in peak season.
Good to know
- The APS certificate does not expire once issued.
- Students with fully-funded German/European scholarships, and PhD candidates whose supervisors waive it, are exempt.
- Not required for courses shorter than 90 days.

Loan process (run in parallel)
- Curate loan documents: academic records, admit/offer letter (conditional is often accepted), KYC, income proof of the applicant or co-applicant.
- Submit for profile evaluation with the chosen lender.
- Initiate the loan process and log in with the desired banks/NBFCs to compare offers.
- Move through negotiation on processing fee (PF) and rate of interest (ROI), then receive the loan sanction letter.
- Complete loan disbursement — timed to the blocked account funding and, later, tuition due dates.

Blocked account (Sperrkonto)
The blocked account is the standard way to prove financial resources for the German student visa. As of 2026, the requirement is €11,904 for 12 months (€992/month), roughly ₹11 lakh — confirm the exact figure with the relevant German mission before funding, as it is revised periodically.
- Choose a provider — Fintiba or Expatrio are the two fully-online, Federal-Foreign-Office-recognised options as of 2026.
- Register, select 'student visa' as the purpose, and complete KYC.
- Transfer the required amount; card funding gives an instant blocking confirmation, bank transfer takes 2–4 days.
- Download the blocking confirmation (Sperrbescheinigung) — this goes into the visa document set.
- Get the final offer/admission letter from the university if not already in hand — most visa applications need the unconditional offer.
Timing
Start the blocked account 6–8 weeks before the intended visa appointment to leave room for fund transfer and verification. If the visa is refused, both providers refund the amount on submission of the rejection letter.
Accommodation
- Check available properties and rates in the target city — student halls (Studentenwerk), private WGs (shared flats), or serviced student housing.
- Connect with accommodation partners to shortlist and book before arrival, since German rental markets are competitive, especially near intake dates.
- Finalise accommodation and get written confirmation — some visa sections ask for proof of address, and it is needed for city registration (Anmeldung) after arrival.

Always book through the official VFS/embassy channel — VFS does not charge for appointment booking itself, and third parties promising guaranteed slots are a common scam.
